access point appear: unidentified network
internet appear bloqued
access: Local only
connection: wireless connection.
Please help check what is the reason "local only".
ip is assigned automatically by DHCP, but is not possible to connect to internet, the problem appear only on windows vista Pcs, in my other computer with XP version the connection is good.
I have Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

Check how your security is setup on your AP. I had to mess with mine a bit. For some reason, my windows 7 machines have been sensitive to it, especially on netgear AP's

I also have this problem. I purchased a built system with Vista Home Premium 64bit with a Realtek 8185 wireless card. I started off with just Local Only (no Internet) after going through dozens (atleast 50) pages and tips I got the internet working after a mixture of things (IPV6, changing channels on router, resetting router, new drivers, etc...). But I still get random disconnects from my internet, much slower speeds than my XP laptop which is 2ft from my Vista machine, and very bad latency while running games. I've also ran traceroutes to multiple addresses and everytime I can get past 15 without it disconnecting.
Router: Linksys WRT54GS v6
Wireless Card: Realtek 8185 Extensible
When running a wired connection I have 0 issues, I also can connect to other wireless networks and have the same issues. I cannot go through with the link presented cause I am unable to find out which registry key is which for my adapters.

This may be a fluke, but it worked for me.Same problem "local only" with my wife's Vista machine.I did all this research and got even more frustrated when I finally arrived at Microsoft's suggested solution. And just did not have the time or inclination to tackle the solution they offered. I was in less than a happy mood.....for all the reasons that y'all cite in your commentaries.Out of frustration I plugged in an ethernet cord to the computer and to the router.Immediately, of course, I was on line. As an afterthough (or because I did not like the visual of that ethernet cord snaking accriss the desk) I disconnected the cord from the computer. I REMAINED CONNECTED......and to the wireless. When I ran the mouse over the taskbar icon, it showed "LOCAL AND INTERNET".Why? No idea. And I don't care. I have better things to do that figure out the WHYs! It worked for me and I hope it works for one or more of you.Happy New Year!André

THIS IS THE ANSWER. NOT STUPID DRIVERS THAT EVERYONE AT MICROSOFT WOULD HAVE YOU BELEIVE. ITS WITH THERE CRAPY SOFTWARE. THIS SITE TELLS YOU HOW TO DISABLE WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEMS.
these support people are just dumb. I've been asking the same ? for 2 days and nobody here can help. If they do answer they just give you a generic response or push you off to another site that might help!!!!!!!
