fix problem "local only" when connection is across a wireless connection

I encountered the "local only" problem after installing a Belkin wireless router. I found that my router was unable to assign a valid IP so I was unable to access the internet. I was able to correct the problem by changing my network interface settings, as follows:

1. Go to "Network & Sharing Center" (in Control Panel).
2. Click on "Local Area Connection - Wireless Network Connection".
3. Click on "View Status".
4. Click on "Properties".
5. Click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)".
6. Click on "Properties".
7. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
8. Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
9. Click "OK".
10. Delete the existing wireless connection. (Go to Network & Sharing Center, then Manage Wireless Networks, then select your wireless network, then press the remove (or minus) button.)
11. Select "Start Button - Connect To", then choose and reconnect to your wireless network.

This process corrected my problem and I was able to connect to the internet.

I have done all of the fixes on these pages. None worked.  Dell says the only way to fix is to reinstall windows. It is a register error. They say  it has to do with ipv6. Does anyone have a permanent fix before reinstalling OS?

My connection is intermittent and the " Local only" comes up after hybernation. I have to keep deleteting the connection and reconnecting, even that does not always work.

I just got the same "Local only" problem today on my wife's computer (Vista).   I tried many ways to fix it (read a lot of the posts online) - none of the tricks worked for me.  Then, I remembered I have the "access control" set on my router - trying to limit kids to use their computers/iphones in a certain period.  I checked the setting and found that the IP address list was messed up (there was a power outage recently) - my wife's computer happened to get a "wrong IP address" and on the "control access list".  Remove the IP from the list, it goes from "local" to "global" immediately!

I could Kiss every one of your magnificent Silicon dimples! I spent from 09.30am to 23:45pm yesterday, trying to install a New Virgin Media Super Hub, speaking to India, Scotland and everywhere in between, and searching every forum and wireless site known to Man and Geek! I tried changing Registry Information, Drivers, Settings galore and nothing worked..... but your simple advice to reinstall the card and update to this driver has at last WORKED!!!!!
