fix problem "local only" when connection is across a wireless connection

Folks I tried everything here and when I got to the Remove Norton Tool mentioned above, that immediately  fixed my "Access: Local Only" problem.  That was the answer for me...  Thanks to all contributors.

I’m going to need you to answer a few questions for me.

1.       When did this first start?

2.       Have you ever been able to use the wireless?

3.       What is the make and model of the router and wireless card you are using?

Can you please bypass the router and hook the Ethernet cable directly from the modem to your computer and check to see if you can access the internet?

The following Microsoft Article goes over a certain situation where Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers. It does include steps to attempt to address the issue but I would like to know the outcome of bypassing the router before proceeding with the steps outlined in the article.

I have to say after sticking with XP until now believing Vista must be near right I am extremely disappointed with Microsoft as as for the statement above that "....Vista cannot obtain an ip address...." WHY, can you just not use what XP did????

I can probably resolve this by manually putting in an ip address for my Linksys router here at home but what am I going to experience out and about while TRYING to use hotspots, I am fearing a world or pain and lack of connectivity.

I am still within 28 days of purchase of this nice little laptop but I still have my old one running XP so this new one might be going back, all due to Vista. I have no trouble connecting on my old machine, I have no trouble connecting on my iPod, just CRAPPY Vista, I don't see how Microsoft can and could have ignored fixing this for around 2 years now and how they can have the audicity to point the finger elsewhere, it's just VISTA and now I am getting the vibe it might be Windows 7 as well.

p.s I have no trouble accessing the internet with the ethernet cable connected Access: Local Only on the wireless.

If the Norton Removal tool didn't work for you, you may have to rebuild your TCP/IP stack.  It is a very simple process. 

Click on Start, in the search box type cmd, hit ctrl+shift+enter.  This will open cmd.exe with Admin privlidges.

Type or cut and paste this: 

netsh int ip reset

Once that is done.  Restart your computer

If you would like that to write a log file you could do this:

netsh int ip reset c:\windows\ipreset.log
