fix problem "local only" when connection is across a wireless connection

access point appear: unidentified network

internet appear bloqued

access: Local only

connection: wireless connection.

Please help check what is the reason "local only".

ip is assigned automatically by DHCP, but is not possible to connect to internet, the problem appear only on windows vista Pcs, in my other computer with XP version the connection is good.

I have Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

    this worked for me (slight typo on the last comand that is i didn't realize so that command didn't work. But in fact i did connect. what is strange is that the connection sometimes shows as local but i still browse. it's gone back a forth several times this morning. 

    Any ideas?

    i have a realtek 8187 in a gateway laptop.  when i check for an update it tells me that it's the lastest. i'm not complaining but this is strange. i have no problem when connected directly nor with other wireless connections to my router.

    I had the same issue. After screwing around with it all day since ABSOLUTELY NOTHING worked that anyone in this forum mentioned and I have a Broadcom wireless adapter. I installed Vista SP2 and it fixed my issue on restart. Hope this helps you all.

    Cutting to the chase:  Agree with all who say Atheros 5700 driver works!  After 2 days of grief, I finally downloaded the 5700 driver and my Lenovo/Vista laptop is back online!

    If you've tried everything else, and have visited the Atheros .cz website but just haven't trusted it, you are just like me.

    I tried everything in this thread...more than once, and like so many others have written, nothing worked.  Finally, and feeling that I had nothing left to lose, I downloaded the 9.1.0.328 driver at the link in Bushwhack's post and updated my Lenovo's 11 a/b/g Mini PCI Express Adapter and the problem was immediately solved!

    Things I was concerned about:

    • Atheros.cz website appears extremely "unofficial"
    • Hard to figure out exactly how to download the driver from the website (keep trying!)
    • Windows kept telling me my Mini PCI Express Adapter driver was already up to date (but apparently it wasn't!)
    • The driver description on the .cz website didn't appear to exactly match my Mini PCI Express Adapter.  My device manager did not tell me exactly which Atheros chipset I have....just said Mini PCI Express Adapter

    Again...after trying literally everything in this thread multiple times...I felt I had nothing left to lose....but this driver did the trick for me!

    I hope this post can help keep others from wasting countless hours with other fixes that may not work...and also keep you from worrying about the things that I worried about.  Thanks to all those who previously endorsed the Atheros.cz download.

    After trying all the recommendations (Norton, regedit, resets, etc.) updating the Atheros driver solved the problem - thanks NathanDoesIT!
