In the Screen Resolution window, under Change the appearance of your displays , click and drag one of the monitors to its correct location vs. the other one. The Identity numbers don't matter.
How to Swap Display Identity (Identities)
Windows 7 - Display 'A' Philips primary display - Display 'B' IBM secondary display. A shows as Identity 2 and B shows as Identity 1. I want to reverse these. Reason is that the cursor currently travels from display B to A and I need it to go the other way - due to physical location of displays

2016-02-15T00:48:53+00:00 I feel like maybe this problem has been left to languish for so many years is in no small part to the history of this thread. The original query actually has very little to do with the problem that has persisted and kept this thread alive for so long. Casual glances at the top of this thread could easily dissuade any Microsoft developers who happen to come across this to dismiss the whole thing out of hand.

2016-02-28T15:23:13+00:00 Thank you Microsoft.
We´re heading up to a 10 years old bug report!!!!!!!!
Happy Birthday to you.....
I agree, how come they can not solve this kind of problem for years.
Where they look at?

I was about to start ranting about this on a new topic, but then I found this one. Deserves a bump. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
I've struggled (and given up) with this problem every couple of years for almost ten years now. Guess I'll keep using my "Second screen only". See you in two years!

2016-11-26T13:43:35+00:00 I'm having the same problem.
I am trying to use x-plane 10 and that has an option to output some things to the 2nd monitor. Thats the option, no other settings.
so when WINDOWS sets up your primary monitor as monitor 2 and I only have 1 monitor connected it all goes fine but I have that option off in X-Plane10
BUT when I connect my 2nd monitor which is via HDMI that new monitor is identified as monitor 1 and my primary is now monitor 2
So when I go back into x-Plane10 and turn that 2nd monitor option on it puts both displays into the primary monitor as its primary which the program is running on but its also monitor 2 which is also what the program is outputting the 2nd monitor data too.
I need to change the identity of my primary monitor to monitor 1 so I can use the 2nd monitor as an actual 2nd monitor so its needs the identity set to 2 NOT 1 like Windows 7 forces onto it.
And since when have anyone in Microsoft actually helped? I've gone through heaps of pages here over the many years of working in the computer industry and 90% of the time they don't have a clue. You usually get the correct answer from a user NOT an admin or moderator as they dont have a clue. They are just there to look good or they look in the manual and copy the answer they think is correct but it usually has absolutely nothing to do with the question asked.
Just about everyone here NEEDS an option to change the IDENTITY of the monitor from 2 to 1 but I bet it wont come from MS, it'll come from someone that actually knows what they are talking about.
We know how to change it from Primary to secondary but even I cant find how to change the identity from 2 to 1.
I did try UltraMon and it only changed it in UntraMon it still didn't change the identity in windows or any apps so all it does is make you think its changed but its not.
Now I've given you the name of an app to try it on.
Primary monitor - DVI - Identity Monitor 2
Secondary monitor - HDMI - identity Monitor 1
HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE IDENTITY FROM 2 TO 1?
sorry, I didn't read the entire thread, I too am using x-plane with the same problem on W10, did you ever find a solution to the monitor identify number problem
