Hello,

I just entered a CD into my disc drive and noticed nothing was happening. So I went to manually click on the disc drive itself, and saw that it was completely gone. When going through the troubleshooting process in Windows 7, this note came up:

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32).

Obviously I need to re-enable this service, but I am clueless as to which one or how to do so. Any help would be appreciated!

Try the following MS KB article:

Try following the steps for Windows Vista which should also work for Windows 7.

    Hi Auggy:

    When you mentioned to create a new System Restore Point, I decided to bring my PC back to the previous System Point (which I had created one recently)mbefore trying your 12 step aproach, and it worked!

    I had to reinstall several updates, and a couple of programs, but that was nothing compare to not being able to access my DVD ROM drives.

    The 12 steps do involve editing the registry so create a System Restore point beforehand and restart the computer afterward.

    The registry file I posted in my previous post will do the same as following the steps.

    Everytime I have clicked in the link you provided back in 2009, it takes me to http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us, which doesn't have any steps, and only allows you to run FixIt. The program "detects" the problem, but is not fixing it.

    I would like to try the 12 steps you mentioned before messing with the REGISTRY of my PC...  Can you copy/paste the steps, please.

    This is the message I'm seeing for all my DVD/CD-ROM devices:

    "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

    I already ran FixIt that you suggested at the very top of this page. The program "detected" the problem, but did not fix it.

    Any other suggestion?
