Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires

Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders

To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box

The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

Edit:

You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

age2_x1.exe

Start explorer.exe

Just use a pc emulator frlike VM Workstation.  This can run in wondow mode or full screen and you can choose the right os for the game ie install windows98. This eliminates all possible gaming problems.

I tried to create the batch file, but it's not executing properly for me.

I took out the last command, "Start explorer.exe", and it runs now, only I have to manually restart explorer through the task manager. Any ideas? Could I make Explorer restart only on the closing of AOE?

Eh... I tried this one on my own

    taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\empires2.exe"

    start explorer.exe

    exit

Works only if you put it in the game dir, you can remove the full path if you wish, I think

Somehow, if I place that batch file on my desktop, AoE 2 complains about DirectDraw
