Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires

Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders

To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box

The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

Edit:

You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

age2_x1.exe

Start explorer.exe

Thank you. This option worked for me.

As a general comment I prefer to use these methods over manual changes or <ctrl> key type over-rides. I have been in situations where things get really screwey when using batch files and <ctrl>+key fixes. As was stated, this will not work for everyone, but I believe it should be the first attempt.

    Thanks again.

I am yet another W7 user with Age of Empires 2. This may be just me, but out all of the solutions I saw here, the only one that worked for me was changing the theme to windows classic and opening the resolution screen. Very weird fix, but it worked when the batch file and everything else didn't do a thing.

If you install "The conquerors" from file on your virtual CD then the drive will be recognized on start. I did have to put a "pause" command in the batch file after the taskkill line to make it work - means a "hit any key" step, but still easier than manually going to task manager.
