Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires

Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders

To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box

The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

Edit:

You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

age2_x1.exe

Start explorer.exe

I'm not sure why this is so complicated...

Right click on the age of empires executable (mine is called age2_x1.exe), click properties, then click the compatibility tab.

Check the "run this program in compatibility mode for:" box, then select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" from the drop down menu.  Then check "disable visual themes" as well.

This worked flawlessly for me on 64bit Windows 7 Professional.

    Hope that helps,

    Mark

    Hello de Bill,

Can you rewrite that program for just AoE II, no expension.

I tried killing explorer manually, it didn't work.

With the .bat file, I got it running once how it supposed to, and now it just runs like before, not good.

    Thanks in advance

Hi, OK, I have updated a little bit the color FIX for you!!! Now, it recognizes beside the expanded version also the old "Age of Kings" ("EMPIRES2.EXE"). So works for both now. From the new version 1.3 it is available!
