Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires

Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders

To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box

The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

Edit:

You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

age2_x1.exe

Start explorer.exe

I just found this to fix the color problem with AOE II

    Go here:

    wwwDOTxomicronDOTcom/software/directdrawfix/

and get the 'OFFICIAL' fix for Age of Empires ALL versions and expansions, PLUS will fix any other older games to work on Vista and Wndows 7. After applying the FIX, you can just run and Play the game normally. Put a '.' where it says DOT in the web address.

    DirectDrawFix

    Referenced under directdrawfix, software

Windows Vista and Windows 7 break color compatibility with certain applications that depend upon palette-based, 256-color graphics. Due to changes to DirectX and DirectDraw, the colors of these applications and games may appear distorted under these newer operating systems.

DirectDrawFix will allow you to resolve this specific issue by applying required compatibility fixes to the registry. Elevation is required for this application to perform its updates.

When using the Direct Draw Fix, you get a pop up that allows you to search for the execute "exe" file for the game.  CLick on the exe file then click on OK and the color problem will be fixed.

I tried out D3Dwindower per someone's recently and did get Conquerors to run in a window in Win7. Very cool. I just had to make sure that UseCursorGet=1 in the hook.ini file to get my mouse to track well.

Pretty cool running Conquerors in a window!

Why settle for a little window when you can play in full screen mode with the CORRECT fix.

Thanks for trying to help, but why would you question that on 2 of MY computers,  that had that windows update, that was what was crashing Conquerors every time? As soon as I removed KB2718523 that particular crashing problem went away.

Just because you didn't need it on your system doesn't mean that other people in the entire world might not have the situation that I was facing.

This is typical of Virii & Malware.
