Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires

Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders

To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box

The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

Edit:

You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

age2_x1.exe

Start explorer.exe

    i wrote this in the registry and it works with The Conquerors

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectDraw\Compatibility\aoe2x 10cp]

    "Name"="age2_x1.exe"

    "ID"=hex:EC,33,74,3B

    "Flags"=hex:00,08,00,00

    I'm using Windows 7 and this answer worked for me. When I want to start AOE I got to Task Manager and end process and after the game I restart it again.

    Thank You So Much!

    Ending the explorer.exe process does not fix this issue with Windows 7 Ultimate.

    For those of us that do not know what you're talking about in "making a batch file", could you please expound on this process?

    The startup colours and graphics are just as they were in Windows 95 & Vista. However, when the "start" menu appears, all of the colours go to (I can't remember what kind of resolution problem it is called!).
