I bought a Microsoft wireless mouse 4000 a month ago. Yesterday it's receiver died on me. I suspect short circuit. After some research, I've realized that I was not alone with this problem, it could be a serial fault.
Once the question appeared on the forum before (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/727a8f10-4aaf-4f1e-bea1-3a73f7e62cf9) but the issue was quickly dismissed.
I bought the thing whole on a trip in Europe and can't have it replaced. Thus the question is, whether to trust Microsoft for the second time and buy the same mouse again, or opt for something else? I need a mouse that works on rough surfaces. But as of now, I may need to overcome my liking for the device and opt for Logitech's Anywhere, unless you reassure me that you will have the transceiver replaced soon.

Microsoft Replacement phone#: 800-933-4750. Product ID = D5D-00001. Have your 4000 mouse handy when you call them. They will need the Product ID (PID) from the bottom.
They will replace yours for free . Replacements carry a 3 yr warranty. You must keep the PID of the original mouse for the replacement warranty.
I am also having this issue on a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 4000. The USB receiver is extremely hot when plugged in for a short period of time. We've had the mouse for about a year and this has been the only issue to date. I've been completely happy with the performance until last week when the receiver stopped working.
I'm going to try the advice here and call into Microsoft and request a replacement, but I've already tried many of the recommendations around the web like changing ports, machine and changing the battery. Hopefully they can send a new one and give us some tips to avoid this in the future.
OUCH! Yep - burnt my fingers taking the USB out. After a quick google search, I realize that I'm not alone. I wonder if the crappy battery life goes hand in hand with this? Battery life was working just fine... Had it for 6 months before the battery went dead (though it was turned on & off religiously, when my boyfriend used it). I took it over about 2 months ago & I've replaced the battery 3 times, and now it's burnt out. I don't turn it off all the time though... Pretty annoying that it doesn't just shut off automatically on it's own - my logitech mouse did. Oh well. Gonna call microsoft in the morning.... Real quick - I don't have the receipt... has this been a problem for anyone?

Dear Microsoft.
I buy the same mouse (WMM 4000, mod:1383) din't have any issue with the heat. But this morning when i plug it to my computer, the USB nano receiver can't be recognized and inmediatly it go hot, so i suspect that the nano receiver is daed, why i do not know because i only plug the nano into the USB.
Now can the revicer replaced or i must buy a new kit?, i think that the nano receiver is CODED to the mouse so i can use a simple replacement i need a CODED to my mouse device.
The other problem is i'm not in US, I'm at Argentina, Buenos Aires. so... some idea or it's easy buy a new one?
