Battery "plugged in, charging", but NOT charging.

Hi,

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.  With Vista, my battery performed very admirably and I never had any issues.  As soon as I upgraded to Windows 7, I now encounter the following problem:

When I mouse over the battery icon in the system tray, it says "19% available (plugged in, charging)".  However, the battery isnot charging at all.  The little battery level animation stops, and, even though the system seems tothink it is charging my battery, it is not.  When I first installed the new OS, the battery would charge to 69% with the same problem, then it went up to 75% for about 1 week before plummeting so that, now, my battery charge ceiling is 19%, which, as you can imagine, lasts about 15 minutes on battery power.

After several redundant and unhelpful communications with Microsoft, I thought perhaps someone on this board might have experience with this issue or suggestions on what I might try.

Please note this is NOT the seemingly frequent problem that some people have with the battery saying "plugged in, not charging", as my system specifically says the battery IS charging when it is not.

It took me some time to even get Microsoft to agree to troubleshoot the problem as they insisted it was because my battery is a bit old.  However, this happens with both batteries I own, using either charger that I have, and, as I said before, it ONLY started right when I clean installed Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ryan

I don't know if this has been solved - I can't find it anywhere that it has - but I did a clean upgrade from Vista home premium to Windows 7 over 6 months ago and only in the last 3 days have I started having this problem. I have a 64bit Sony and it charges to 69% and stops. I tried all the known fixes: cleaned the connections, the various battery / AC configurations, draining it and recharging it and none of them has corrected the problem. I contacted Sony and the stupid woman told me to clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. I called the local store and the tech said that I need to look in the battery care section and see if the power settings have it set to only charge that high. Except they have to be manually set and the Windows install wiped that file and I can't get it re-installed so that's not it. His only other suggestion was that maybe my battery just needs to be replaced (which, coincidentally has been discontinued by Sony).

If anyone has found a fix for this I would love to know what it is. I am having the same problem. The techs at staples said I needed a new adapter. I bought it and had the problem cntinue, I returned the adapter 3 times thinking they sent me a defected one. They then told me I needed a new battery which cost me $135 it did not help. I took the laptop in for a free diagnosis which they said it would be but still ended up paying $69 just so they can tell me they do not know what cause the problem. This bull **** and microsoft needs to solve this problem. I have paid so much excess money on those phony websites that say they can help but did not. The laptop is dell with microsoft vista and only 2 yrs old. What a scam

    c1778,

I think what you are looking for is under advanced power settings.

    click start,

in the search box type powercfg.cpl

    click change power settings

    click change advanced power settings

sevenforums.com has very good tutorials if you need further info

I am having the same issue with a Dell E6400. Two different batteries (one new) and two different chargers. Indicator says x% available, plugged in charging but the battery never charges. I can put the battery in another laptop and it charges right up. I've tried every solution I've found on the web with no results. Uninstalling **Microsoft**ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, various iterations of battery/charger combinations and powering down, holding the power button down etc. Any other suggestions?
