Battery "plugged in, charging", but NOT charging.

Hi,

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.  With Vista, my battery performed very admirably and I never had any issues.  As soon as I upgraded to Windows 7, I now encounter the following problem:

When I mouse over the battery icon in the system tray, it says "19% available (plugged in, charging)".  However, the battery isnot charging at all.  The little battery level animation stops, and, even though the system seems tothink it is charging my battery, it is not.  When I first installed the new OS, the battery would charge to 69% with the same problem, then it went up to 75% for about 1 week before plummeting so that, now, my battery charge ceiling is 19%, which, as you can imagine, lasts about 15 minutes on battery power.

After several redundant and unhelpful communications with Microsoft, I thought perhaps someone on this board might have experience with this issue or suggestions on what I might try.

Please note this is NOT the seemingly frequent problem that some people have with the battery saying "plugged in, not charging", as my system specifically says the battery IS charging when it is not.

It took me some time to even get Microsoft to agree to troubleshoot the problem as they insisted it was because my battery is a bit old.  However, this happens with both batteries I own, using either charger that I have, and, as I said before, it ONLY started right when I clean installed Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ryan

I am having the exact same battery problem. Battery message is "(plugged in, charging)" but remains at the same percentage.

If I unplug the computer, the battery percentage (naturally) goes down. When I plug in the computer again, the percentage stops going down, but doesn't go up again.

I've had Windows Vista Premium 64bit installed for over a year. For the last year, my battery has charged without issue. This just started happening a couple days ago.

My battery is only a year old and I never use it. Per ryanr1083, I also believe this is an OS issue.

*Possibly related bug: The clock on my task bar froze in mid-afternoon. Clicking the clock to bring up the detailed date/time window showed the appropriate time. However, the wrong time remained frozen on the task bar.

Is is possible the charging hardware is faulty? Can you raise the issue with the manufacturer, or possibly revert to Vista to check the behavior?

I bought a new battery and it is doing the same thing mine goes to 10 percent and then doesn't charge anymore even though it saying plugged in charging. I didn't have a problem with vista after I installed fresh windows 7 my old battery icon said change battery . Well I did and it not saying replace battery just doesn't charge pass 10 percent windows 7 is such a piece of ____ I paid alot for an upgrade only to suffer from a battery problem and now I wasted money on anew battery . Microsoft needs to addres this problem this is bull ____ ! If I find a work around I will post it here . Goodluck !

Thanks for the response.  None of those links was helpful.

Also, I am curious why you think it might be a problem with the battery.  As I said in my post, the battery worked fine with Vista, and stopped working fine the minute I installed Win 7.  Is it your position that my battery coincidentally "broke" at the exact same time I installed the OS?  Please also note that this happens with BOTH batteries I own, using BOTH chargers I own.  This does not sound like a hardware problem to me.
