Windows 7 - Does Windows offer virtual desktop options?

Actually, for the record.. no this doesn't have any sort of virus attached to it. I can't believe people are still using either archaic virus programs or outdated definitions, or what the problem is, but I went directly to the site, downloaded the 1.6 beta executable file, and used it immediately without a hitch. Works like a charm too I must say.

I currently run avast! antivirus - it gave me no warnings upon download, run, or install. I manually scanned it with no warnings.

I copied it over to my wife's machine across the home network - she has the latest Symantec running - still nothing.

Tried one last time on my laptop running McAfee - still nothing. Also think about it - is Google projects going to allow something virus-ridden to sit around their code servers? Not likely.

So all of you who keep finding viruses 'attached to this program' either need to update your dfinitions, try new software, are just trying to cause trouble, or already have a virus that is attaching itself to certain incoming file types that you need to clean up. I'm not just railing on you KrisK  you just happened to be the last person so I replied to your post.

Also, yes this is my first post on this account as I swore off Hotmail / Live years ago - but when somebody takes the time and effort to code up something like this and then share it with the community *ESPECIALLY THE MICROSOFT COMMUNITY* then I'll be darned if I'm gonna sit back and 1) not take the time to thank the person for something I truly appreciate and find useful and 2) sit back and watch while people are erroneously accusing that person of being some sort of cirus pusher.

Ok so /rant - sorry 'bout that, but had to be said by somebody. Feel free to flame but the truth is what it is.

On a personal note: Thanks Jason for the program. mDesktop does exactly what it says it does and although I look forward to watching it progress, it does what I need it to for now and makes my life a whole heck of a lot easier having been used to my Ubuntu machine for so many years. (I'm forced over to Win 7 for my new job :P but hey - at least I have one!!)

So .... for the record .... this has a trojan attached to it. I would sway away from it despite the great reviews. My gateway AV caught it but not my local AV. Just thought everyone should know.

"The window manager controls the way your desktop works: how the windows look and act. The window manager decides what kind of decorations to put around the windows. It's the window manager's job to provide ways of controlling the windows, like moving, hiding, resizing, iconifying, or closing them. The window manager decides what window at the moment accepts input from you and what window is on the top. The window manager also controls the ways you do these tasks: what mouse buttons you click or what keys you press in order to accomplish these window management tasks."

Jason's program does not add decorations, allow you to move, resize, iconify, or close.  It sorta gives you a way to hide windows, but not the in "press a button on the GUI" sort of way.

It is not a desktop manager in the sense that you cannot have a different set of desktop icons in each desktop.  However, I believe that's a feature he's planning on adding for future releases.  And in any case, it allows you to have multiple virtual desktops.

Maybe "lightweight virtual desktop manager" would be the most apt description for this program, but calling it a "window manager" and definitely not a "desktop manager" is more fallacious than leaving out the semi-superfluous word "virtual."  It is further from being a true "window manager" than it is from being a true "desktop manager."

Yes, I can see how users like getho might be confused, but really...if you don't take the time to read the program descriptions before installing, you might install something that doesn't do anything for you.
