original title: Multiple desktops in windows 7 ?

Hi,

Why Windows 7 is not providing the virtual desktops like in Mac or Linux ? It helps a lot in arranging the applications into various groups like personal, office etc and placing them on different desktops.

Best regards,

Bins.

Hello SanatTalmaki,

The download does not seem to be malware. I suggest you might scan the file with another Antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentiasl and see if you come up with the same results.

You can download Microsoft Security Essentials from the link below:

Thanks,

Marilyn

I've developed an application because I wanted the same thing. My program is extremely lightweight and requires no configuring.

You install, or you can use the zip and just run it. Then use alt+ the number of the desktop to switch to it. Then alt+ctrl+number to send the active window to a desktop.

My program is open source and free.

The current desktop is shown in the tray on the icon, and the icon can optionally be hidden.

(sigh).  If you want your report to treated seriously:

    a) what trojan/virus?  A link to the characteristics would be appreciated.

    b) what AV scanner was used?  Some fire off more false positives than others

    c) when was this virus scanner last updated in terms of definitions?  When was the last full version release?

    d) what operating system are you using? is your gateway AV scanner "tuned" to a particular operating system?

    e) if this is something that communicates with the outside world, one way you can protect yourself is to create a firewall rule (built into vista and 7 at least) that blocks this program from sending any data over the internet.  Other than for a process to check for updates (which you can always do manually) this program has no need to communicate, so you'd be safe shutting that ability off of this program.

If it's reporting on the "hidden windows" activity, that's already been explained.

If you're convinced there is a virus/spyware/trojan, it's your duty to report this to google with a full report.  I believe that google and all reputable download sites scan programs that they host for viruses, but I suppose there's always a chance that they miss something.

I personally use Sophos AV (11.0 - definitions today, core program updated 2010) on the computer on which I have this application installed.  This program produces a frustrating level of false positives (e.g. thinking "hacking tools" and "key cracks" are evil) and quarantines practically EVERYTHING, however does not detect a virus in mDesktop.

So, adding to Haplo's AVs that do not produce a positive virus response we have

Avast, symantec, sophos, mcaffee.  I'm assuming latest definitions on all of those.  It's possible that the makers all of these virus scanners are being lazy and are missing a current/emerging threat.  It's happened before historically for sure.

Actually, for the record.. no this doesn't have any sort of virus attached to it. I can't believe people are still using either archaic virus programs or outdated definitions, or what the problem is, but I went directly to the site, downloaded the 1.6 beta executable file, and used it immediately without a hitch. Works like a charm too I must say.

I currently run avast! antivirus - it gave me no warnings upon download, run, or install. I manually scanned it with no warnings.

I copied it over to my wife's machine across the home network - she has the latest Symantec running - still nothing.

Tried one last time on my laptop running McAfee - still nothing. Also think about it - is Google projects going to allow something virus-ridden to sit around their code servers? Not likely.

So all of you who keep finding viruses 'attached to this program' either need to update your dfinitions, try new software, are just trying to cause trouble, or already have a virus that is attaching itself to certain incoming file types that you need to clean up. I'm not just railing on you KrisK  you just happened to be the last person so I replied to your post.

Also, yes this is my first post on this account as I swore off Hotmail / Live years ago - but when somebody takes the time and effort to code up something like this and then share it with the community *ESPECIALLY THE MICROSOFT COMMUNITY* then I'll be darned if I'm gonna sit back and 1) not take the time to thank the person for something I truly appreciate and find useful and 2) sit back and watch while people are erroneously accusing that person of being some sort of cirus pusher.

Ok so /rant - sorry 'bout that, but had to be said by somebody. Feel free to flame but the truth is what it is.

On a personal note: Thanks Jason for the program. mDesktop does exactly what it says it does and although I look forward to watching it progress, it does what I need it to for now and makes my life a whole heck of a lot easier having been used to my Ubuntu machine for so many years. (I'm forced over to Win 7 for my new job :P but hey - at least I have one!!)

    Take care all,

    • Hap

So .... for the record .... this has a trojan attached to it. I would sway away from it despite the great reviews. My gateway AV caught it but not my local AV. Just thought everyone should know.
