I have Windows 8.1 and it is definitely there. 8.1 is free if you have 8. Just Google it. :)

Starting with Windows Vista, the 'up one folder level' button has been removed!! I found this button to be HIGHLY useful and am VERY disappointed it is not there any more... This has drastically slowed down my production speeds!
In the following image from Windows XP Explorer, near the top right between the 'Back/Forward' buttons and the 'Search' button, you see a folder with a green arrow pointing up. Clicking that button makes the Windows Explorer go "up one folder level" bringing you to the parent folder of your current location:

Is there any way at all to get that button back PLEASE? This will drastically improve my production speeds...
(Whenever I click a 'browse for file' button in Windows 7, the explorer starts at the last folder I was looking at and I often just want to go one or 2 folder levels higher than that, but the only way to get there is to start completely at the beginning from the C: drive and navigate through all the folders to get there which can get VERY time consuming since I find myself browsing for folders 50 times/day simply cuz the 'up one folder' button is missing...)

The shortcut key combination [Alt] and [↑] works in Windows 7 and later and carries out the same function.
Button wise you can click within Windows explorer to get 1 up, 2 up, 3 up, 4 up, ...
Windows explorer in Windows 7 is far superior to that of Windows XP. Its slightly improved in Windows 8.1 again but the usability gains in Windows 8.1 are overshadowed by the overall usability loss due to the Metro interface. Windows explorer in Windows 10 should have the advantages of Windows 8.1 without the losses and a few other gains.

2015-03-03T09:13:29+00:00 first I was forced to downgrade from win xp. so I chose win 8.1. what trash that is. so I just upgraded from that to win 7. I don't remember the up button in 8.1. all I remember is wanting to smash my computer for the past year. bouncing between two systems, stupid side bars, no start menu, adds popping up constantly on ie. completely unproductive and frustrating. where am I?, what's going on?, what am I doing? there goes the sidebar again! awr! back to metro! aww! the taskbars gone! oh! there's explorer. side bar, side bar! wow! I bet those programmers were using macs.
I decided to fork over another 100 bucks for win 7. what a relief. so far. missing the up button, I can deal with that. but why does Microsoft decide what one wants or needs or uses. just leave it there and add to it functionality if possible. they say xp was a security risk? isn't it my choice how secure I want to be? but the real truth is that xp was too secure. the government, through microsoft's help, couldn't track you and whatch what you're doing as easily as with the new systems. so all the new sharing and connectivity stuff is just a disguise to keep an eye on your activity. don't believe me? just post something stupid on facebook or somewhere about something happening at airport or somewhere and see how fast the fbi or cia show up at your door.
