Want to set 'num lock' to be on and active at Windows 7 Log-in screen on new HP G60-530US laptop.

Have tried a number of methods to have num-lock activated at Windows log-on that were suggested for XP and Vista, but with no success. These include making registry changes to set

InitialKeyboardIndicators to a value of 2 at

HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

and also running a numlock.vbs script in

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

as per Microsoft support site http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314879

Regardless of what I have tried, including shutting down with num lock activated, num lock will be 'off' when the computer is rebooted. There is no setting in the BIOS to control num lock. Does anyone have another suggestion?

I experienced the same problem myself; fortunately, the solution is simple.  For some reason, the default value of some of the registry keys (not all) were changed in windows 7, which causes the system to apparently ignore the InitialKeyboardIndicators settings in the other locations.  All that is requireded is the performance of a search of the registry using regedit for that key.  It is important to use the find function to locate ALL keyboard keys forInitialKeyboardIndicators and set them to the same value setting.  The value options are as follows:

0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)

1 - Turn CapsLock On

2 - Turn NumLock On

3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On

4 - Turn ScrollLock On

5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On

6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On

7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)

In my case, the string value was some 7 or 8 digit number such as 21765430.  These entries are the cause of the reboot change in the num lock status.  If you want it on when you boot, set the string value to 2 in all the keys with numeric values.  Problem solved!

The value 2147483648 is a decimal string that is equivalent to 0x80000000 in HEX.

Change the value to 2147483650 which is 0x80000002 in HEX.

The 2 is the value that turns on numbers lock as was shown earlier in the post.

I found a discussion from a Mr Joe Morris on Technolgy questions forum from 2007 that indicates that the upper bit (8) determines

whether the BIOS or Windows detemines the numbers lock state at logon. If it is an 8 (upper bit set) then either the BIOS or the 2 value will determine the numbers lock,

if the upper bit is 0 then the 2 value alone determines the numbers lock state.

ok its very simple and easy it checked it 10 + times with changing the numbers

to keep the NUM lock on at your login screen

if the value is 2147483650 then turn on the num lock option from BISO (100%) fix

to keep the num lock off at your  Login screen

if the value is 2147483650 change it to 0147483650  just first number to 0 (100%) fix and you can leave the option in bios for numlock key to be on

in my company we are using Dell Latitudes and all of the laptops are  win7 professional , i have t sort them out all of them this fix helped me

hkey users and current users do not define the machine, only certain aspects of a user's account. You need to set the machine key instead.

I found exactly what you described and changed all occurrences of the value of 'InitialKeyboardIndicators' to 2. Hadn't had a chance to verify yet because my PC, a one week old HP Pavilion Elite HPE, is busy with a task. In the unlikely event that this change doesn't work, I'll let you know.

In the meantime, thanx for a clear, concise, and knowledgeable reply that is head-on. With the mild rain of unqualified blither that one tends to get in Forums, answers like yours are always the rare pearls. Wish any time someone replies with a 'blither' reply, they'd have to pay a big fine to be distributed to the 'good' guys who only write when they reallyknow what they are talking about.
