Windows Update Error 80072efd. (windowsupdate_80072efd)

Hi, I have been having numerous problems with the Windows Update Error 80072efd. I have tried every solution to no avail.

Initially I was getting the “Windows Update error 80070002”. So I followed the solution as proposed by Microsoft. Namely I stopped the Windows Update service, deleted temporary update files, and restarted the Windows Update service. But then when restarting Windows Update I ended up receiving this lovely new error called WindowsUpdate_80072EFD. I tried restoring the computer to a time before I had received any of these problems, but I still got this error. I tried to solve it by turning off the firewall and by waiting 30 minutes before updating again, but to no avail. Then I added these sites as trusted sites in the security of internet explorer

I then created a new rule in the advanced windows firewall that allows the program: wuapp. In the basic windows firewall, i added wuapp as an exception. Again, to no avail. So I clicked on the Start menu, selected Run and type the following: regsvr32 Dssenh.dll Gpkcsp.dll Slbcsp.dll Sccbase.dll This gave me a window that said: "The module "Gpkcsp.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .dll files. The specified module could not be found."I then uninstalled the anti-virus (because I couldn’t disable it) and still received the same error. I then added these sites as trusted sites in the security of internet explorer

I read somewhere to run the Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773), but no such updates exist for vista. I then created a coupld new rules for windows firewall: outbound rule for a TCP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, an inbound rule for a TCP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, an outbound rule for a UDP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, and an outbound rule for a UDP Port of the number 65,55,184,125. Again, to no avail. I read that I should disable any software accelerators, but to the best of my knowledge I don't actually have any. Any help would be appreciated.

Problem: When you try to use Windows Update or update Windows Defender to check for and install updates, you receive one of the following error messages:

Windows Defender error code 0x80072efd

Windows Update **** error code 80072efd

The following solution worked for me on a PC running Vista SP1. This was after all of the other suggestions provided by Microsoft Support at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 did not work.

Solution (Vista SP 1):

Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
Right-click “Command Prompt” Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.
Try the update again.

They do offer a long list of things to try.

Besides the firewall/AV ones, there are some advanced methods in the second 1/2 of the above link.

The solution to my last problem regarding getting the screen: "!! 0xc01a001d !! 288342/89953 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedData..." (without the quotes) was fairly simple. I just inserted the reinstall DVD for Windows Vista and then selected repair. That may have actually worked for all the other problems I mentioned, I just hadn't thought of trying it till now.

Yesterday somehow a VIRUS/Trojan got into my computer and what it did was change my internet settings on BOTH Firefox and Internet Explorer to use a proxy. The internet therefore did NOT work on both browsers i had installed. So naturally since i use only firefox 100% of the time and since i know all the settings really well, I very quickly figured out the virus had somehow changed the settings to use a proxy so that made my internet work again on firefox. I instantly forgot the same problem was happening with internet explorer since I hate it, and it never crossed my mind to fix it since I NEVER use it and since I could care less about that browser. In the past I even tried to get rid of it but turned out windows update needed IE in order to work (i found this out with win xp in my desktop).

The next day (today) I try to run the Windows Update and the damn error shows up and I am unable to get the updates so I spent about 5 hours trying all kinds of solutions but nothing worked. It never crossed my mind (since I am running windows 7) that MicrosoftSTILL uses internet explorer to download the darn updates... so when I read your post I snapped and remembered I had not fixed the settings in Internet Explorer to not use "a proxy" as well which the VIRUS changed! And I did just that, I disabled using a proxy from inside windows internet explorer and I ran the Windows Update and it freaking worked!!! Problem fixed.

Since it is Windows 7 and since no internet explorer windows pops up when running the windows update (like it does in Win XP - i never had Win Vista though so i dont' know if it does in Win Vista),but I assumed microsoft no longer needed to run internet explorer to download the updates but somehow for some reason microsoft still does and somehow internet explorer is used even though it is not even opened and you cant see it in task manager...ugh...

**Anyways, I did also get rid of the virus and trojans (turned out i had 20 infected files/trojans). I cleaned my computer by following whatkringlecreekposted (which he was told to do by a Microsoft employee ) which was fairly simple to do although I did learn something new: Malwarebytes that was installed in my computer was somehow infected by the virus/trojan so after the full scans were completed and it said it got rid of all the infected files/trojans(quarantined them) it was NOT true! So I uninstalled it, downloaded a clean copy, re-installed it (of course in windows safe mode) and it found all the infected files/trojans again and got rid of them for good. So that's a new thing I learned.

I also tried what MedionMedion and finally987 posted but my TCP/IP settings were already set to automatically so that was definitely not my problem; however, I assume that if their windows update suddenly stopped working for no reason and therefore they had to change their TCP/IP settings back to getting them automatically then I am pretty sure a Virus/Trojan must have changed their settings just like the Virus/Trojan changed my settings yesterday!

Anyways, thanks to peonmaster my problem was solved and now Windows Update works again on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit laptop. If only I had known Windows 7 Windows Update still runs Internet Explorer to get the updates, I wouldn't have wasted 5 hours on this very simple problem. Thanks a lot still!

Hi, i hope it's ok using this thread to post problem myself... I got my comp from my son as he bought a newer one, i have tried to get iTunes to work with syncing my iPhone several times. It just wont work i have error msgs come up "unknown error occurred (-9812). When looking for answers i came across did i have SP1 & SP2 so i looked & found i hadn't. My son said he checked box for automatic updates which i saw he had... I then went to Windows update & tried to update but all i keep getting back is windows error code 80072EFD... I tried your solution (Vista SP1) above but i then got C:\Windows\system32>netsh winhttp reset proxy Current WinHTTP proxy settings: Direct access (no proxy server). I still go online & it says i have no internet connection when i look in network, there's a big red cross between picture of comp & globe????

I'm no comp whiz but i used to get all SP's & iTunes to work on my old comp before it died on me a couple of months ago, which was a XP...

I have Windows Vista home premium, Vista 32 bit operating system, no SP's installed at all... I have Kaspersky Anti-virus 8.0.0.454 installed on comp. I have rang them & gone through disabling anti-virus soft ware to see if this was stopping but it still wouldn't update at all... Please can you help me...
