usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

I have the same problem - usb memory sticks don't work on any of the usb plugs on my Win7 system but my usb headset works fine. The memory sticks work on my XP computer. I've tried the "fixes" you have mentioned - no effect. My Win7 system at work quit recognizing usb memory sticks for a while but worked when I tested it yesterday. This is totally unacceptable and makes me thing my Mac-fanatic friends are correct.

Computer - Cyberpower with Asus Sabertooth X58 Mobo, i7 950, 6GB, Win7 pro 64 with SP1. All drivers are up to date.

I have this problem as well. I bought a Logitech wireless mouse with a USB nano-receiver to use with my new Win7 netbook.

It worked fine for a short while, but eventually crashed with the message "USB device not recognized." I moved it to another port, where it installed and worked fine. That is, until it crashed again. I moved it to the third port, where it proceed to work for a short time and again reported "USB Device Not Recognized". Being out of ports, I tried it on my full-size laptop, also Windows 7. I experienced the same series of crashes. I now have a useless $30 mouse.

Incidentally, anything else I plug into those same ports works fine. When I plug the receiver into a port, nothing happens. It doesn't even make the sound to notify that something was just plugged in.

I was prepared to purchase a new mouse to solve this problem, believing I had bought a lemon, until I discovered that it works fine on my son's Vista laptop as well as my husband's XP laptop. That is when I began scouring the internet for solutions, which I have now spent hours trying, including those shown in this forum.

I am not an expert in this area, but I'm no novice, either. I am not particularly pleased that I have to tinker with the registry to try to solve this problem, but I did attempt that fix as well. Not only were the components I was told to delete "not there" - when I attempted to run the backup afterwards (Just in Case) it returned an error message. I think of the millions of people who are less savvy than I, and I wonder how they are supposed to manage with this same problem, clicking around in the registry, creating multiple new users and copying files, deleting system devices and hoping they reinstall (my webcam did not - but I didn't knowingly delete it so I'll be working on that some day soon.)

I am prepared to throw this mouse in the trash but before doing so I had to respond in this forum because this is clearly an enormous problem and the solutions offered have ranged from "unplug your computer" to "try a fresh install of Windows" with everything imaginable in between.

It would surely be nice to see a Windows 7 Update that fixes a problem I have had since my purchase dates last year.

I also have a problem with usb devices not being recognized. They range from standard ehhanced pci to usb host controller (only) other usb controllers are fine, to any other usb device I plug in. Drives, mice, motherboards, card readers, etc. I have tried the above methods, regedit, cmd prompt, shutdown battery out. To have the same failed result. To be fair, I just changed the motherboard and cpu. They are not direct replacements for the oem parts. Drivers are installed, the latest. Uninstalled and reinstalled, no dice. I can't just reinstall windows because the oem didn't furnish an OS disc.

Any suggestions.
