usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Hi nagababuendla,

I clicked "update driver software" and it says it's "up to date",but it's still not working.Any other ideas?

The article you make reference to addresses issues with USB "drives" not being seen by windows which is not at all the problem that the originator of this thread reported. He/she is stating that when plugging in any of his USB devices (which happen to be drives) he's getting an error that states "USB device is not recognized" - implying that the driver has not been installed, rendering the device unusable.

I am experiencing this same problem with ANY USB device I attempt to plug into my computer - whether it be a wireless mouse or USB drive. Same issue - balloon warning in system tray pops up saying "USB device not recognized - one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned...." - or I'll sometimes get no response whatsoever. I've tried replacing the motherboard and same issue persists - which tells me it's not related to the motherboard and I highly doubt that each and every one of my USB devices is faulty - leading to one logical conclusion: A problem with the O/S (Windows 7, professional, 64 bit).

These sort of bugaboos with PC's is what's driving people (in droves) to Apple. I just worked with a client yesterday who, after I resolved issues with her printer suddenly no longer printing - the driver had become corrupted) she turned and said to me "you know, all my friends who have MAC's seem so much calmer and more peaceful when it comes to their computers...."

Microsoft are you listening? I doubt it.

Hi DJBigBang

I solved this by formatting, installing SP1, then updating Windows fully.

Dell Studio 1537, Windows 7 64-bit.

Nature of problem: If I put in a USB device and removed it, Windows wouldn't recognise any newly inserted USB devices till I restarted the PC.

The actual order**** I followed:
1. Installed device drivers (USB devices were working at this point)
2. Updated Windows (USB devices were working at this point).
3. Installed SP1 (IE11 installation required it) - (not sure if USB devices were working)
4. Installed SOME Windows updates (USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED)
5. Finished installing Windows updates (USB devices working again) - created restore point clearly identifying it is working.
I'll create an image so I can return to this point.
