So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks     This is real FRUSTRATING

Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hello DJBigBang,

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

Just a quick note, not a very happy one. This computer is approximately 1 year old. Already, as have evidently a great multitude, I am having "WINDOWS" problems with the system... ["USB device is not recognized"]... NOT anything caused by ME, MYSELF, nor I... This problem needs to be remedied by WINDOWS... not me searching ALL over the friggin' "net" to attempt to repair the problem MYSELF. I do not understand "computer language" well enough to be doing diagnostics and repair on this piece of **** Windows 7 edition. My thought is that the brainchildren that created the program in which the problem lies should develop a single fix for the problem, and in that thye problem appears to be universal, I should not have to pay [cheapest=$30] to remedy a windows screw-up. As many have experienced... rare are any of the "fixes" offered at any sites beneficial and appear to be short term "patches" rather than cures. AND, to add to this problem what other damage might *I* be doing not knowing just what the **** it is I *am* doing. Such as this is not a very good endorsement of the "WINDOWS" name... and now I understand why so many are electing "other than windows" component computers. I now can appreciate more those that chose MAC over windows. If only I had known then what I almost know now, I guarantee you that I would not be trying to BLINDLY repair YOUR errors. And then the WINDOWS program attempts to tell me the "device" that I am trying to use is corrupted... that' is pretty friggin low, as well. The same devices work quite well on other computers.

Like I mentioned earlier... not a happy note, here. It's quite unsettling... I could pack the computer in the original box it came and take it back or mail it in for repair... losing it for a period of God knows when... and if the problem was not a universally noted one I may have done that... but I have decided that before I do that I will take it out into the back 40 and use it for target practice. And never will another WINDOWS component system enter my home.

Believe me, I know how you feel, I've been there.  I finally just gave up and went and purchased a new mouse for $10 on sale.  No problem ever since.
