usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

1. I have a keyboard and a Trackman Wheel working just fine on the KVM switch they are hooked to.
2. My system is an Intel DG33TL. It has all current updates,BIOS,Chipset ,Ect.
I performed the steps you sent. They did not work again as I have seen and tried them before.

Unplugging it from the wall does not work either.

PNY does not have drivers for Win7 as they are not needed for anything above Win98.

There are NO Windows Update Drivers in Windows Update . There NEVER are any for flash drives. I would love to see Win7 Update for USB Flash Drive , but I don't think I ever will.

I can go to Device Manager right click Unknown Device click Update Driver Software and I get ...

" Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date"

"Unknown Device"

So What Do I Try Now ?

I would let a MS Tech remote this and look around if one wishes to do so. Send me a free phone number and a reference number.

I am not the only one with this problem and I should not have to pay for them to figure this out.

I also am not going to do a fresh install as others have done to fix this.

This is just a simple flash drive (plug and play) in Win7, the most advanced OS from MS available to the public. I'm not trying to plug in a scanner to Win95.

Hello,

You may use the below provided steps and check if troubleshooting the device according to the below provided steps assists you -
1. Open cmd Prompt.
2. At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER:
“set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1”
1. Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
“start devmgmt.msc”
1. Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager. (**they will be greyed out)
NOTE: Click Show hidden devices on the View menu in Device Managers before you can see devices that are not connected to the computer.
1. When you finish troubleshooting, close Device Manager.
2. Type exit at the command prompt.
Note that when you close the command prompt window, Window clears the devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable that you set in step 2 and prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you click Show hidden devices.

I do not see any devices with trouble in Device Manager. Only when I plug in a drive do I see trouble. Windows can not find drivers for any of the flash drives I plug in. As for seeing Devices that are not connected, I don't see anything different after I perform the CMD steps then I see when I open Device Manager normally. The only things ever connected by USB have been Flash Drives, Ext HDD , KVM , Mouse, and Keyboard. Only the Mouse, Keyboard, and KVM have worked. Lets not forget that Flash Drives are Plug & Play. I figure once the Flash Drive issue is solved the Ext HDDs will most likely work too as they have no drivers (not needed in Win7) and are Plug & Play too.
