usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

This may be rare but after days of struggling with this problem, trying dozens of fixes from this and other forums, I found a quick, total solution to my case. No USB drives of any size would work. Windows 7 Pro's USB would recognize them, just no letter was assigned and the contents were not accessible. All other USB devices worked normally.

My solution:

I plugged in a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive and it was found by Windows 7, but no drive letter or file access occurred. I went to DEVICE MANAGER, found the WD Passsport under DISK DRIVES. I right-clicked the WD drive and chose PROPERTIES. I clicked the DRIVER tab and clicked DRIVER DETAILS. In addition to two windows files:

C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys

C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\partmgr.sys

were two Samsung files!

I have a SAMSUNG SSD. In CONTROL PANEL, PROGRAMS AND FEATURES, I uninstalled the two Samsung programs that came with the SSD, rebooted and all was normal.

Every disk and every USB port worked normally!

This may be a totally obscure cause, but maybe someone else out there is sufferings from this same behavior. I wasted days trying to fix this and the solution that worked took 2 minutes.

Hey Seal,

I feel your pain (and frustration).

Tell me this, have you tried plugging into your computer an entirely different USB dvd drive - of different make and model? I'd be curious to know what happened if you did or do in the future.

Also - have you tried the steps as suggested and outlined above by Berserker-Baste?

Here's one you'll all love.

I've been doing some searching (message boards, tech sites, etc) to try and find a solution to my problem but I've found nothing. Here it is.

I cannot get my USB DVD drive to be recognized by Windows 7. Yeah, I know. That's what we're all here for, but I've got more. The DVD drive in question worked fine when first installing Windows 7 on my computer, but after the system was installed and was finished downloading and installing all the updates from Microsoft.com, it stopped recognizing the drive. I can plug the drive into another computer and it works just fine. So, I know the drive is OK. I can plug other devices into the USB ports on my computer and they work just fine. So, I know the USB ports are working OK.

I've tried doing all the fixes I've found like running Fix It and messing with my Registry entries and resetting my system memory by pulling out the battery. I've done ALL of that, but the computer still will not see my DVD drive.

It's not like my Device Manager is telling me that it can't recognize the drive either. I plug the drive in, the disk spins up but nothing happens on the computer. No unrecognized drive. No grayed out item or unknown USB item in the Device Manager. Just nothing. Nothing at all. I have been reduced to plugging my USB DVD drive into another computer on my network to install programs.

All I can figure is that one of the updates, probably a Service Pack, messed something up. I have even gone through the trouble of wiping my computer and starting over from scratch, but the same thing happens.

I could really use some help here.
