usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Hello DJBigBang,

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

    Hello everyone, I had this problem with two computers. I have a HP G71 laptop and after I installed service pack 1 for win7 I got the "USB device not recongnized" from win7 Ultimate. My laptop is two years old and I think is why I quickly fixed it by using device manager and the update driver feature therein, for each USB listed.

    My desktop, an eMachine T3604,on the other hand is six years old, I have increased ram, installed a dual core processor enabling 64 bit processing and upgraded the OS from WinVista Ultimate 32 bit to Win7 64 bit Ultimate.

    Again after installing the service pack 1 the OS gave me the "USB device not recognized" error message. I researched it on the web and found two useful items that helped resolved the issue.

    First I shut down the desk top and unplugged the unit from the wall outlet and let stand for about one minute and then pressed the power button to ensure all power drained, after five minutes I plugged the system back in the wall outlet. This process forced the mother board to reboot all its device drivers and fianlly in device manager I found USB devices that had not been listed before this action. However, my PDA was still not recognized.

    Second, in this discussion thread there is a procedure as follows:

    1. Click “Start”, type “REGEDIT” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press Enter.

    Note: If UAC (User Account Control) pops up, please accept it.

    1. Right click “Computer” (the root node) in the left pane, click “Export” under the “File” menu, choose “All” under “Export range”, and select “Desktop”

    in the “Save” in box and type backup in “File Name”. Click “Save”.

    Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

    1. Click “Start”, type “REGEDIT” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press Enter again.
    2. Locate the “UpperFilters” value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

    1. On the “Edit” menu, click “Delete”, and then click “OK”.
    2. Locate the “LowerFilters” value under the same key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

    1. On the “Edit” menu, click “Delete”, and then click “OK”.
    2. Quit Registry Editor and restart the computer.

    I completed this, I only found the upperfilters in my registry and delted it, and hurray my Treo was recognized, as well all my USB Bluetooth, flash drives etcetera.

    I hope this will work for all and hope the Microsoft gurus will take a look at the Win7 service pack 1 to determine why it causes the USB issue.

    Sorry I Took So Long ...  After not wanting to reload Windows and start all over I had to anyway. I just got this box back up and running after one of my 2Gig memory mods took a dump and took out my hard drive.  Recovery from install disk would not even work.I did separate the RAID and used only 1 drive to reload for now. I will pull data off the other (I'm still trying to get it to boot) and reRAID later. But That is all another problem.As for this one ,I did unplug the KVM but that did not work. The problem existed before the KVM with just a plain old USB mouse and keyboard attached. I did not get to try the clean boot or corrupted profile ( only 1 profile on here) as I was reading email one day and WAM Dead Box (didn't even have video). So now, things are up and running again and all is well with the USBs, KVM and all. I am bummed out I didn't get to find out what was wrong but I hope it doesn't happen again. Thank You Both for your help.  I did learn a few things so it was not all a wast of time.
