usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks     This is real FRUSTRATING

Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

    Step 1:

    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3

    Copy the below files:

    USBSTORE.INF

    USTSTORE.PNF

    USBSTORE.SYS

    Paste the files in

    C:/Windows/inf/

    Step 2:

    Then go to device manageer (START, serach program and files for Device Manager, then click it). It will show a list

    of devices, and half way down is an 'UNKNOWN DEVICE' with the yellow icon next to it. Right click that and

    'reinstall driver' or 'update driver software' - > Browse my computer for driver software -> Put the path 'C:

    \Windows\inf'..

    This should install the USB devise

    Step 3:

    If you get an error while installing that, the next step is to go to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/USBSTOR.SYS

    and paste the file USBSTOR.SYS file only mentioned in Step 1 (if prompted to replace, pls allow)

    I got rid of this annoying popup message by going to control panel; then search for "notification area icons" ; now click on notification area icons, scroll down to Windows Explorer icon that says "this device can perform faster" and select "hide icon and notifications" from the drop down menu to its right; since I did that I have not seen that annoying popup.

    Once again, Microsoft has invented a novel way to WASTE TIME.

    I have 9 USB drives 0-- installing ONE takes 10 MINUTES for Windows to process the request and clear the drives.

    SO in order to use a USB stick I have to spend 90 MINUTES uninstalling drivers

    I have an idea -- why doesn't Microsoft do the right thing and write a patch to fix this stupid problem? Why does Microsoft expect that is it okay to burden the customer with mindless fixes to problems that should not exist in the first place?

    Yeah, and while I am at it -- was it really necessary to make correcting these problems much harder in W7 than it was in XP?

    I am off to find an XP OS --
