usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

I got rid of this annoying popup message by going to control panel; then search for "notification area icons" ; now click on notification area icons, scroll down to Windows Explorer icon that says "this device can perform faster" and select "hide icon and notifications" from the drop down menu to its right; since I did that I have not seen that annoying popup.

Thanks for the tip Fred. My particular problem did not involve a device not working. My wireless mouse worked fine. In fact all my usb devices worked fine. Yet, that crazy pop-up kept saying a usb device wasn't recognized. I tried everything on the above steps. None of them worked. Besides all my peripherals DID work! (figure that one out). So, I followed your steps and disabled the notification for the unrecognized device. ~PRESTO~ problem solved... lol

The following is a copy of my original post on sevenforums.com:

"A few days after buying my computer I purchased the USB WLAN Adapter in the title. It worked perfectly for at least a year. After that, I started having the occasional "device not recognized" message. Unplugging and plugging again solved the problem. Later it got worse. I had to unplugg and plugg several times for it to work (my record was 113 times). The strange thing is, it only malfunctioned after I turned the computer on. If I made it to work (using the unplugg and plugg routine), and left my PC on, I'd have no trouble. I could even switch USB ports at will, it would always work after that first time. If I had to turn off the computer, I'd go back to square one (restarting was no problem, though). Now, I just can't make it work. No matter how many times I unplugg/plugg, I always get the "device not recognized" message. I tryied the adapter in another computer (with Vista Home), and it gets detected with no problem whatsoever. The computer where this issue happens, has other USB devices, and they all work without a single problem. I'd really appreciate some help with this, I don't want to waste money on another adapter just to find the exact same problem happening.

I already tryed all the solutions suggested to me in that forum. I tryed all the solutions in this thread. Nothing worked, except when it started to work randomly, for no apparent reason. Of course, after turning the PC off I got back to square one. After turning it on again, the problem is back.

With this issue, I have no way to connect my PC to the Internet, making it an over-priced paper-weight. This has been going on for almost an year, and there's simply no satisfactory fix by MS. Should I just accept that W7 is a broken OS, and get an OS that works?
