usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Thanks This is real FRUSTRATING

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Probably not. Those whose USB problems have gone away after installing 8.1, by doing so, more than likely eliminated some setup, update, or installation problem incurred with 7.

It appears it was my BIOS settings:

EHCI Hand-off Enabled, Legacy USB Enabled, selected USB Hi-Speed, Plug and Play OS Yes, PCI latency to the highest number (this seems to have no effect on anything).

But before the BIOS setting changes, I made these system changes:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
- In the details pane, locate theServicesPipeTimeout entry, right-click that entry and then select Modify. Note: If the ServicesPipeTimeout entry does not exist, you must create it by selecting New on the Edit menu, followed by the DWORD Value, then typing ServicesPipeTimeout, and clicking Enter.
- Click Decimal, enter the new timeout value in milliseconds to 120000, and then click OK.
- Restart the computer.
- In Services, change the startup type of Windows Driver Foundation to Automatic (my default was Manual).
Notes:

The various methods to reset and clear USB areas mentioned above are harmless, and may have to be done to start with a clean slate. In Device Manager showing hidden devices, all ghosted entries should be uninstalled. This is also benign since if they are supposed to be there, they will be reinstalled on the next boot, or scan for hardware changes.

Deleting any default registry entry is neither a fix, nor a good idea. In any case, it is wise to back up the registry just in case.

None of the "fixes" contained herein worked for me. I have 7 x64. I tried every one of them. Clearing the BIOS hardware memory by draining the PS, as well as reinstalling all the USB controllers and hubs work, but the problem returns.

With my Kangaroo USB thumb drive, I sometimes get error ID 7009. You could read about the fix here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/a8dde2ce-7051-416c-9958-c641657486e7.aspx

I raised the delay from the default of 300000 to 32500, then to 38000 and it did nothing.

Incidentally, I have no USB problems in Debian Linux x64 on the same machine. So it's not the bios, it's not the chipset drivers, it's not the Service Control Manager timing, and reinstalling controller and hub drivers is not a fix, and should not be required under normal circumstances. The motherboard is brand new, as well as the HDD. The processor and memory are used but passed any test I could throw at them. The system runs perfectly otherwise.

Moreover, the chipset driver Serverworks HT1000 is included in 7 and shows no errors anywhere.

Do we have to purchase 8 to have this resolved? This is an innuendo.

Hi,

I don't know if things have changed since then but the device manager doesn't allow the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" to be uninstalled: When I right click on it, apart from scan for change option there is only the "properties" option and on the "properties" window there is only one Tab "general" and that only contains one phrase: "**Universal Serial Bus Controller"**as a description tag. So if it can be uninstalled and re-installed it can not be done through the device manager.

I am running 64bit version but that shouldn't make any difference and I have the latest updates according to Windows Update.

Ever since I connected a USB Hub the system doesn't seem to be able to recognize any NEW usb devices, including the Hub. It recognizes the old devices in different USB ports but not new ones like a USB Flash drive!!!!

I ran "fix it" and I got a strange report. According to "fix it" I haven't included update drivers but there is no option to enable or disable update drivers specifically anyway!!!!!

I have run the Windows Update manually and downloaded all the important, recommended and many of the optional ones as well. So I have not idea if my drivers are up to date or not!!!

What is going on? I thought of up dating to Windows 8 but I am worried that I might land myself in a bigger problem. This machine is used mainly as a media player. I have and external drive installed on it but it would be useful to be able to connect a USB drive from time to time and transfer selections of music and videos for travelling or lending to friends.

So you please tell me what is going on?
