I am try to defrag my hard drive. It's on its 4th pass in 24 hours. How many passes does it make before it's done?

have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

    i7 processor w/ 4GB RAM.  240GB HD is on pass 4,688: 1% consolidated after 74 days.  My HD will be wore out before this completes.  Maybe MS has an agreement with drive manufactures to increase wear and tear...

    Dude... If your running an SSD (Solid State Drive) Your not supposed to defrag, I'm assuming your using an SSD anyway, because its only 240 GB. Solid State Drives were only meant to be written onto so many times before losing integrity, and the way they work means there is no front of the drive or back of the drive which is what defragging does, it orders it to the front of the drive where it can read the quickest. A solid state drive has refrence points from what I understand, and that would mean it would continually cycle all the files to the different reference points infinitely. Just using up the valuable write life of your SSD.

    If you are just using a plain old HDD then disregard what I said.

    christ, thats what i thought the first time i read his post too, i7 with a 240gb drive? probably an ssd.

    defrag has no purpose on an ssd, ssd internally manages itself, google how it works, arstechnica has a good writeup on how ssds work, same with anandtech.  their internal workings have no relation to how disc works, its all translated.  writes kill ssds slowly, and 4600 passes on an ssd is severe murdering of your own drive lol

        I've got an SSD and I read everything about it first, that being the most important, I defrag my HDD secondary drives regularly though. :) Still never had more than 2 real passes on my caviars when defragging, sometimes it goes to about 8 or so, but the last 6 passes take a total of 1 second altogether.

        Still curious as to why some peoples drives take so long and so many passes... Maybe an outdated setup... But then the wait should be no surprise.  Figuring out what determines the amount of passes is more or less why I'm following this thread.
