How many passes before defrag finishes?

I am try to defrag my hard drive. It's on its 4th pass in 24 hours. How many passes does it make before it's done?

have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

    It's been TWO DAYS...pass No. 2...at 5%. Told me my 300GB external HD was 31% fragmented. It has 4.70GB free out of 300GB. I think I'm going to be waiting for a few MONTHS!!!

    I don't know what you expect with only 1.5% of your disk space free.  I'm surprised that it runs at all. You need to free up some space or get a bigger hard drive.

    Yes! That's why I thought to defrag it, because it takes ages just to copy something from there to my internal HD. I never knew I was supposed to defrag regularly. I've wanted to free up space for a while, but never had time to do it. I bought a larger HD and everything, but at this point it would take months to free up space because it's running so slow...

    I've also seen 10 Passes in Windows 7.
