I am try to defrag my hard drive. It's on its 4th pass in 24 hours. How many passes does it make before it's done?

have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

    Just finished after 16 passes in 1 hour 20 mins. First time I've run defrag on this laptop. The last 3 passes were very fast.

    It takes as many passes as it takes. If you never defrag, and you thrash your data on your hard drive, it will take some time, depending on how much has to be defragmented and consolidated.

    I am switching to SSDs,

    NEVER EVER HAVE TO DEFRAG AND SSD, and, if you do, you are really stupid because it ruins the SSD.
