have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

Two things: There is absolutely no reason to defrag a drive that's reported as 2% fragmented, and although I can't account for the continually odd behavior of the Windows "optimizer,"  when you have a relatively small amount of free space, the process will always take longer than you think it should.

I'm gearing up to suffer the criticism and judgment of the expert users here but I figured I'd post my experience for another poor sod such as myself.

I had a 500 GB (actually 465 GB) drive with ~59 GB free. I was about to clone it to a larger drive so I figured I'd tidy up and run the Disk Optimizer/Defragmentation first, even though it said only 2% fragmented.

It ran for 20 hours (until I stopped it). It was at Pass #221 (Two Hundred Twenty-one) at the time that I ran out of patience and worked up the nerve to stop it.

For kicks, at that point I selected "Analyze" again - and it said 0% fragmented. Why the heck did it not stop "defragmenting" if it had reached 0%?

So... I may be the winner to date with my 221 passes (mind you I didn't study all 16 pages in this thread).

BTW, the clone went swimmingly - which was a relief untold.

I have just taken 12 passes to complete the defrag process so be patient, you'll get there.
