I am try to defrag my hard drive. It's on its 4th pass in 24 hours. How many passes does it make before it's done?

have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

    mine is 500gb hdd and fragmentation is around 6%gb of where 400gb+ is already used..just thankful its finish now..it took me around 8 hours to finish defragmenting it in different times by recontinuing the process since it takes too long, i think it took around 20-25 passes..whew

    yep well assuming even 40mb/s continuous read alone 500gb would take 3.5hours just to read it all if i didn't screw up the simple math. and of course its read write and small bits aka "fragmented" so even worse, and no sorting algorithm is that clever so going in passes is going to be the way to do it, making it even slower.  so even if it hits the drives more likely max read speed of maybe double that, it will take a while...

    in win vista/7 you can look at what files the drives are reading and writing and how fast in task managers performance manager section, then you can get a good idea of the true speeds its working at.

    mine actually is on pass 9 now after 2 hours..now i wonder how many passes it will still take for i saw somebody said the highest is 8..whew

    the question is how big is your drive.  the thing can't work faster than your drive, drives are huge now, reading and writing a terabyte of data takes a long time, even with sata and the rest.  yes drives have ratings of near 100mb's reads now, but thats assuming a huge contiguous file, performance of harddrives drops massively when reading and writing small bits, so its going to take as long as it is going to take to read and write the data on your drive, any program that is faster generally is just cheating.

    It depends on how big the disk is, how bad it is, how full it is, and  what you have running at the same time.  I had my 84 full/250 GB hard drive run all day and was only on the 9th pass when I got home. So I wasn't running anything while I was gone. It still took a total of about 10 hours and 12 passes. Also, after each pass, the computer has to "recollect" data which can take time.
