I am try to defrag my hard drive. It's on its 4th pass in 24 hours. How many passes does it make before it's done?

have seen as high as 7.

they seem to get faster the further along it goes.

look into using AUSLOGICS degragger instead.

faster and also has an option to move system files to the front.

    750 GB Drive: not sure how many passes; this is my first attempt: at 6 so far.

    I just assume to defrag every day.

    I have windows 7, purchased in spring of 2012, with a 500gb hard drive. This is the first time i've defragmented, and the scan shows it as being 33% fragmented, which i assume is pretty bad, as it's supposed to stay under 10% or so.

    It's been a week and a half of defragmenting and it's on pass 13, 88%. It hasn't changed since i woke up about 7-8hrs ago.

    I'm using Windows Defragmenter, if I stop operation will it lose all progress? or does it defragment with each pass, and I can just run it again later?

    Taking around 60 minutes total, with 10 passes. 

    The first 6 passes took about 35 minutes all up.  Pass 7 took perhaps 8 minutes;  Pass 8 took around 7 minutes;  Pass 9 took 5 minutes;  Pass 10 still took 5 minutes.

    So there wasn't really a strong trend of the passes getting faster.  (More like wishful thinking.)

    End result:  "0% fragmentation". 

    This is with a 1 TB (Toshiba) internal laptop hard drive, with 'only' 257 GB of used space. 

    The BIG QUESTION: 

    As this is scheduled to run automatically in the background with a weekly frequency on my laptop, and given I may have added merely 500 MB or so (less than 1 GB) since last week, why should it take so long to defragment!!

    Note:  on this occasion it took some digging around before I realised why my system was responding so slowly, and I more-or-less let it run while not using the computer to do any other processing (with few exceptions, like opening IE to search on this topic!).
