Why are Windows updates so slow (and long) with VISTA

Compared to WinXP, windows updates take MUCH more time with VISTA:

  • the downloads are often very slow(er)...
  • the installation is also very slow(er)
  • more annoyingly, after mots updates, a restart is required AND implies (often)

. a post-installation process ... (Configuring updates ... "Do not turn off your computer") thattakes several minutes before shut down...

. a second post-installation process (configuration) upon restart that takes also several minutes...

The last update took me about 40 minutes to complete !

Will Windows 7 improve this...  It makes people to refuse updates especially if they are using portable computers and are on the road.  Who can stop for 40 min ...

    Yes, absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

    And to chime in about the speed at which updates are searched and download, mine are dreadfully slow on Vista and always have been. For a couple of days it was able to check very quickly as it once was with XP, but that is no longer true. I have to leave my PC on overnight just to check for updates because it can take hours. HOURS!

    I have been so frustrated with the extremely long update times with Vista for so long I upgraded to Debian.  Updates are now very quick and very easy!

    The windows update in Windows Vista SP2 on my one CPU core Acer takes DAYS ! 

    Allthough it has a broadband connection of 200 Mb/s and a standard LAN networkadapter of 100Mb/s and tens of GB of hard disk space.

    Last time (also after days ! haven run continuously) the windows update was finished on 6 Oct 2016. 

    On 17 Oct 2016, I again launched the Windows Update.

    Now, on 19 Oct 2016, the Windows Update is still running.  

    The SVHOST.EXE process with the WUAUSERV service running in it (a thing you can see by means of the Windows Task Manager via the Process ID or PID of the Process and the Services) has now exactly 29H56m29s and is still using up over 90% of the CPU time. Changing the priority of the SVHOST.exe from normal to low allows me to have a 'responding' laptop again, but as soon as the system finds the time, it again continues with the Windows Update.  This isn't AT ALL a energy saving process !

    Sorry for the MicroSoft Engineer, but there is definitely very wrong in the concept of the Windows Update of Windows Vista, and looking at the hundreds of complaints, also of Windows 7.
