Why are Windows updates so slow (and long) with VISTA

Compared to WinXP, windows updates take MUCH more time with VISTA:

  • the downloads are often very slow(er)...
  • the installation is also very slow(er)
  • more annoyingly, after mots updates, a restart is required AND implies (often)

. a post-installation process ... (Configuring updates ... "Do not turn off your computer") thattakes several minutes before shut down...

. a second post-installation process (configuration) upon restart that takes also several minutes...

The last update took me about 40 minutes to complete !

Will Windows 7 improve this...  It makes people to refuse updates especially if they are using portable computers and are on the road.  Who can stop for 40 min ...

    I am doing mine right now and its been an hour and it still in zero percent.

    Do you know anyway to make it faster.

    Not that this may be a really good idea, but... .. .

    I skipped Win8 am am now on Win10. There are some problems‡, and getting on top of the new Windows update scheme requires some work, but the updates are faster... .. .

    ‡My beautiful Microsoft® Wired Keyboard 200 (I have four) won't work with Win10.

    ‡No more DVD maker or Media Center

    ‡Microsoft will trick you into using your Microsoft account as logon, troublesome and possibly invasive.

    Ya I'm with you guys on the slooowwww updates. I reformatted my pc yesterday and am STILL downloading updates! And I have FiOS! Vista updates are trash. Not only does it take long to download updates, it even takes 15 minutes for it to just search for updates sometimes! That is complete ****!

    I have abandoned Vista and moved to Windows 7 Ult.

    Updates are still slow, so no help there.

    I regularly download at up to 50MB/s except at Microsoft where it an erratic 10KiB/s.

    And these are the folks who tell us the Microsoft Cloud is going to save humanity.

    Currently testing Server 2012 for doing work with powershell in Active Directory.

    Updates are SLOW. SLOW SLOW. Before the 'you have slow internet' camp chime in, I always have speeds of ~25 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up. You just have to accept that that there are many things that Windows does (always has, always will) SLOWLY.

    Windows truly does need to evolve a decent package manager. May I suggest something modelled on BSD Ports, Debian Aptitude or Arch Pacman?
