Why are Windows updates so slow (and long) with VISTA

Compared to WinXP, windows updates take MUCH more time with VISTA:

  • the downloads are often very slow(er)...
  • the installation is also very slow(er)
  • more annoyingly, after mots updates, a restart is required AND implies (often)

. a post-installation process ... (Configuring updates ... "Do not turn off your computer") thattakes several minutes before shut down...

. a second post-installation process (configuration) upon restart that takes also several minutes...

The last update took me about 40 minutes to complete !

Will Windows 7 improve this...  It makes people to refuse updates especially if they are using portable computers and are on the road.  Who can stop for 40 min ...

    Currently testing Server 2012 for doing work with powershell in Active Directory.

    Updates are SLOW. SLOW SLOW. Before the 'you have slow internet' camp chime in, I always have speeds of ~25 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up. You just have to accept that that there are many things that Windows does (always has, always will) SLOWLY.

    Windows truly does need to evolve a decent package manager. May I suggest something modelled on BSD Ports, Debian Aptitude or Arch Pacman?

    Let's all face it, the Microsoft empire is made up the stupidest smart people on the planet.  They employ not one psychologist to advise them on the human interface.  Instead, being as smart as they all are, they know that they know what is best for everyone and attempt to cram it down everyone's throat.  I'm 60 and grew up with computers making it a career that provided well and have been a MS user most of my life.  Windows 8 has broken barriers on arrogance and throat stuffing, I have now have an apple and will never be back to MicroShit again.

    I agree Windows Updates are incredibly slow I just updated Windows 7 after a fresh install using a Verizon Fios connection on a quad core Acer aspire with 8gb of ram the total update size was 890mb That's almost a GB of updates that's all fine and dandy, but so far it's taken 7 hours to do the updates. What confuses me the most is 800mb is about the size of a standard movie usually I can download that in about 15 minutes.

    I've called Microsoft and after the runaround from tech support and getting 30 different answers to the same question it was finally explained it was for "Security reasons" which isn't the reason at all because Windows has never been secure  there are various hacks and activation workarounds and even keygens for every edition including windows 8. So to say it's an anti piracy measure is a load of %&@..

    The only solution I've found was switching to Linux.

    It's fast it's free it isn't prone to viruses, and there are several mods that allow 100% compatibility with windows and apple programs. I think this is the reason no one writes viruses for Linux. And it updates and installs in under 20 minutes..

    It is not the downloading that it taking so long byt the configuring of my computer after the updates are installed. For several hours now I have been looking at a blue screen and the words " Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer.
