Hello kim,

I´ve done what you´ve suggested, and now i get the error 0x80070424........Can You help me?....Please....

Hey Dalton,

I moved your reply to a new thread since it's a new error code.

The error code 0x80070424 you described also means "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST".  Windows Update depends on these two following services:

  1. Windows Update
  2. Background Intelligent Transfer (BIT)

If it happens that these services are disable or missing, you will encounter this error code.  Hence, you will need to ensure that the necessary services are available and running.  Here's how:

1.       Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2.       Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

4.       Double-click Windows Update.

5.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

6.       Double-click Workstation.

7.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8.       Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of Services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site and download the update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159/en-us.

    I found Background Intelligent Transfer Service. it was running. but there was no windows update?

    nothen helps i've tryed every thing to start updates sitll won't start

    i try to do what you said but i cant find the Workstation  in the services... help please. my computer in windows XP but it is also compatable with Vista.

    Hi Kim,

    I too just had this problem, erro message, today and the first time I've seen this since I've had XP. Everything quit....the MS Essentials, MS Firewall, and the MS Windows Updates. I'm a techie and try to fix things myself before asking questions and followed many of the suggestions in the faqs and help solutions but nothing worked. I had tried the first solution as you stated to Dalton above and that did not work either.  The "Start" button was not visible, only the Stop button.  Note: This might be a fix you all might want to work on too for anyone else.  I then put the error code in the searh link and found Microsoft Answers and click on the link and got here.  I read though all the responses on this page until I got to the bottom where Marc answered Naill's question with the dll string statement in the Run box.  That WORKED! and fixed everything - yea!. Thanks for your help although I did not ask a question. Gail
