You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

    This extension is better than nothing, but is not fully accurate in restoring the positions if the unwanted scrambling of positions was therr esult of changing monitor resolutions (e.g., you have a laptop with a 1280x800 native screen, and you dock the laptop to a 1024x768 monitor). When you try to restore the positions, the icons restore to the same general region on your desktoip, but not the same. Interestingly, repeating the restore continues for the first 2-3 repetitions to bring your icon layout closer to the original, but not exactly. That would seem to be diagnostic of what the underlying problem with the routine might be.

    Yes, I know this thread is old. Sue me.

    What you can try if you have the time take a process analyser, that is able to see what registry and what files are being accessed as soon as you MOVE ANY desktop icon. Maybe, just maybe if you are lucky it will give you an indication WHERE the system saves this information and thereby you can save the files manually (system files AND registry export) and thereby make your own restore process with batch files. Just a thought ...

    How can I save desktop icons position and restore when needed in windows 7 ultimate x86

    I am running the 64 bit operating system.  Does this fix work for the 64 bit system?
