You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

That software had maybe good intentions in 2010, but now trigering identity protection alarm with my anti virus sw.
I found this, which helped me in my case:

Basically, having moved any icons (or changed any view settings), you can return to how your icons were arranged when you last logged in, by killing the explorer process. This usually restarts itself on modern versions of windows.
This works because the icon positions are saved when you log out, and restored when explorer starts up after you log in. Of course, if any other operation saves the icon positions then this won't work.

Why is such thing not part of the OS? Issue still occurs on Windows 10!
Why is such download, if it is really from MS not at microsoft.com but on winhelponline.com!?
One way I have used:
Take a screen shot of the desktop with icons visible and save this for later use.
When the icons are moved for whatever reason, bring up the photo on half the screen.
Drag and drop icons on the other half of the screen using the photo as a guide.
It may be necessary to move the photo about or move the icons in stages.
This is easier if you have two screens and it works every time.
