Save desktop icons position and restore when needed in windows 7

Best app I have found uses a shell extension, so you right click on your desktop and select save desktop. Just remember to save your desktop when it is exactly how you like it. Also has multi-monitor support. Then whenever it gets messed up, right click and restore desktop.

You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

Sorry, but on Win 7 64 no good.  I found this and it works.  Has a 64 bit version.

I really would love to use the tool under http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout/ as mentioned above, since it is stated that this works also for windows 7.

I have a 64-bit-version of Windows 7 running on my machine, and after installing the layout.dll and adding the registry entries, still nothing happens, the tool is not working.

Am i doing something stupid, or is this tool not working on 64 bit versions, or is there any other reason?

SO now what???  I'm **** that every time I do any kind of update, like Windows Update, or Change installed options, or uninstall/Install a program I'm messing with the Icons again. Bummer!  This does not work in 64 bit Win 7.  See my next post below for answer or goto here.

I've been using DesktopOK 3.64 (x64) free for about a year. Download on SoftwareOK.com, You can manually save your configuration, or it automatically saves every reboot.

The advantage for me is I do VPN log ins from my phone while I'm away. This causes my log in session to log off, and for my dual monitors, rearranges all my icons to fit the one screen. The next time I get back to my desktop, I just launch the program and restore with a doubleclick of an intuitive listing from previous saves.
