You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

    Ramesh: As stated before, i have Windows 7 and the tool does not work, there is no reaction at all. Is this because i have 64bit, or should that be independent ?

    You're correct. The tool works in Windows 32-bit editions only. There seems to be a separate software/add-on that works for x64 systems as well. Check out https://www.google.com/search?q=desktop+icon+position+x64.

    Thanks Ramesh, that works. I've downloaded the Layout.dll but what do I do with it? Double clicking doesn't seem to work as the system is asking for a program to run it with and I'm not sure what to use that's safe.
