You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

    I *think* so... i googled today on "42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1" and found this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/everytime-i-refresh-my-desktop-the-icons-auto (thats a post from 2012, so waaaay before win10). I actually found a lot of posts and many of them mention a virus. I often scan my pc for virii, but never found one (other tran trojans in e-mails that *try* to infect me).

    So i assume this fix is not just for win10. Hopefully Heisenbeerg can confirm this (and maybe he knows what is causing it) :)

    I had the problem on a Vista system and yes it does have ESET.  Running MALWAREBYTES also triggered the rearrangement.

    Are your instructions applicable to Vista Home Premium?
