Laptop turns off whenever the lid is closed

Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid.  I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged.  I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum).  Nothing has helped so far.  The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

Hello!!!

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

Hi dhunter452,

I would like to clarify the following things:

  1. What settings have you defined when the lid is closed?
  2. Have you checked if the issue persists with a different power plan?

When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.

I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:

1.    Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.

2.    On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.

3.    On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.

4.    Click Save changes.

See the link below for more information:

I've got a Lenovo G505s, and before updating to the latest Insider build*, whenever my laptop went to standby mode (I keep it on a desk and never close it) I would have to wake it from the power button. Nothing else would work - not the keyboards or mice it has either built in or plugged in. I'm thinking it was an issue with the default Windows ACPI (power controller).

*Do not try to install the Insider Preview build to attempt to fix your issue. Insider builds are considered in BETA, and have many broken components. While it may fix one issue, more will appear. You should never install a beta operating system as a main OS**.

** I broke my laptop by doing just this. I had to revert to 8.1 because Win10 was completely broken.

Hey guys I think I found your problem although I'm not sure because I haven't tested this yet. So basically I think your laptop is going into hibernate, not powering off (although they're basically the same). Here's how you can fix this. (in widows 10)

    1.) go to settings

2.) find "edit power plan" (you can just search for it in the stings app)

3.) then go to "change advanced power settings"

4.) A new window should pop up. Scroll down to "Sleep" and press "+"

5.) Under "Sleep" find "Hibernate After" and press "+"

6.) By clicking "on battery" or "plugged in", you can now change how long of inactivity it takes until your computer hibernates (its prolly set at 120 min).

Like I said I haven't tested to see if this works yet but I'm pretty sure this is the solution.

it's funny because ive had this problem since I got my laptop last week and ive researched all over the internet and literally nobody has the answer. Hope this helped

Thanks for that Ryan. May very well fix the problem for others, but for me those settings are already set the way i want them, however the laptop still shuts down every time. I have been told it is an issue with my AMD processor and not having the right driver. Still trying to resolve the issue with AMD at this point.
