Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid. I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged. I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum). Nothing has helped so far. The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

I would like to clarify the following things:
When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.
I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:
1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.
2. On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.
3. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.
4. Click Save changes.

Still having this problem. It's annoying because when I'm watching Anime and I have to close my lid to move locations... I can't resume my anime because my laptop turned off! Even if my settings are ALL set to Sleep when Lid Closed.
Not sure if this helps you--or if you even still need this--but I JUST resolved this for myself, and thought I'd share the knowledge in case this is what's plaguing anyone else.
I've been searching for the answer to this exact problem for about a year now, and everything pointed me to Power Options, which like you, I was already well aware of, hadn't changed any settings in, and had tinkered with tirelessly to try and fix this.
Then I discovered there's something called "Fast Startup" and that it likely got switched on after an update. Found directions on how to switch it off (this is the article that explained to me that this option even exists in the first place) right here.
Again, not sure if this is the right fix for you, but it helped me and I hope it'll help others with this maddening problem, because it was definitely making me crazy! Good luck!
I have had the same issue twice now and both times happened after windows updated. First time it eventually stopped after another update was done very shortly after the first. And here we are again Windows update again and shutting off again. So damn annoying.
