Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid. I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged. I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum). Nothing has helped so far. The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

I would like to clarify the following things:
When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.
I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:
1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.
2. On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.
3. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.
4. Click Save changes.

I have the same problem. After upgrading to 10, laptop won't shut down. Turns off when I close the lid.
I edited the power plan, restored to default, etc. Still the same problem for a month now.
Thank you Patrick! This solved the problem for me as well, and startup speed doesn't seem to be negatively impacted. I really appreciate you posting that.
BTW, for those who asked, I would assume that "Remove the V from "Turn on fast start-up (recommended)" just means to uncheck that option. :-)

Once I got windows 10 this has been happening to me. In settings I have it to sleep when on battery and do nothing hwne plugged in. But the sleep method takes as long and if not longer then just shutting down. It does the exact thing and takes 3 minutes to start up. Before windows 10, when I closed the lid and opened it, my computer would show the log in screen. I contacted asus but they said to reset my computer which I would not want to do.
