Laptop turns off whenever the lid is closed

Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid.  I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged.  I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum).  Nothing has helped so far.  The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

Hello!!!

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

I would like to clarify the following things:

  1. What settings have you defined when the lid is closed?
  2. Have you checked if the issue persists with a different power plan?

When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.

I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:

1.    Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.

2.    On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.

3.    On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.

4.    Click Save changes.

    I have the same problem. It started two nights ago. Whether on battery or AC, when I partially close down the lid to the point the screen light turns off, the HDD shuts down with a "crack". I have to remove and replace the battery to turn it back on. Also, with the screen mostly closed, the power button doesn't turn it on. It only works when the screen is up.

    This is horrible.

    A little more than 2 years later and nobody at Microsoft has answered this question correctly??  Even Tina came through to say the same thing I was going to say.  

    I know exactly where those settings are at for the lid open/close options and I have "Do Nothing" selected for both plugged in and battery.  Yet for some reason, my laptop will shut down completely after I've left it closed overnight.

    How do I set it where it does not turn off at all, no matter how many days I have my laptop closed?  It seems to only work for a few hours, but once I leave it overnight...I wake up and all of a sudden my laptop is OFF.  No clue why and this is bothering the heck out of me.

    Someone please help!!
