Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid. I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged. I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum). Nothing has helped so far. The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

I would like to clarify the following things:
When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.
I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:
1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.
2. On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.
3. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.
4. Click Save changes.

I've got a Lenovo G505s, and before updating to the latest Insider build*, whenever my laptop went to standby mode (I keep it on a desk and never close it) I would have to wake it from the power button. Nothing else would work - not the keyboards or mice it has either built in or plugged in. I'm thinking it was an issue with the default Windows ACPI (power controller).
*Do not try to install the Insider Preview build to attempt to fix your issue. Insider builds are considered in BETA, and have many broken components. While it may fix one issue, more will appear. You should never install a beta operating system as a main OS**.
** I broke my laptop by doing just this. I had to revert to 8.1 because Win10 was completely broken.
Yea, here's hoping. Haven't heard a response back yet and been sitting waiting for chat with the answer desk for at least an hour now and nothing.
Though update on my issue, I think my computer may simply be restarting when I open the laptop again and not shutting down when I close it. The light on my laptop is blinking like it's in sleep mode but then doesn't turn on like it is.
HP Pavilion g6 for me.
I have the same problem on my asus zenbook, just updated to win10 and now it turns off when i close my lid...
the power seting is set to do nothing (i have lost tons of work because of this) please fix!!!
