Auto update to Security Center 2010 kills Windows 7 search

Actually, it's not the auto update to SC 2010 that is the problem, but rather McAfee Total Protection itself that has a built-in defect when run inside Windows 7, Pro and Ultimate included. which is the last of 10 pages of discussions about this issue.  It is NOT a Microsoft issue, it IS a McAfee issue.

When we shut down our Internet connections and removed McAfee through Control Panel, andremained offline so as to protect our computers from infiltration, Indexing worked excellently.  Rebuilding our full system's Index ran for more than 8 hours but when finished, searching through 9+ Tbs of storage drives took only a matter of minutes to find over 16,000 files using a partial name search.

But after reinstalling McAfee, the problem slowly returned and new files were not being indexed, as well as older files began to disappear from the search results.  When we rebuilt the index, it stalls and only shows a few of the more than 846,000 files we have on our drives.  To workaround for now, we removed McAfee and rebuilt the index again, then reinstalled McAfee BUT we won't rebuild the Index again until they give us a hotfix.  We know the Index will collapse over time, but it's the best we can do... except we took our production machines over to Norton, which works fine in Win 7.

I blamed Microsoft, too, until I found this thread by google searching on "windows 7 search".

BTW: McAfee is still distributing and downloading to new users... anyone with Win 7 will have the problem if they allow Windows 7 to Index.  They are paying for a feature in Win 7 that is awesome, but it gets blocked by McAfee. McAfee is supposed to be pulling out the stops to get us a hotfix so we hope they get it out soon.  In the meantime, we work with it as we do with any other software with a glitch.  Most Win 7 users won't know they even have the problem if they don't do much searching.  Once the fix is out, McAfee will deploy it through their subscriptions so all will be well.  Life is always good, sometimes it's interesting, too.

XP found in it's simple way any word in any Word document and searchable PDF. Windows 7 just ignores them. Is this a next episode of Lost?

Go for a neat little Freeware program called 'Agent Ransack' ; I think this will solve most of your searching issues!

Only serious masochists into extreme self-abuse buy Microsoft products.  I am not a big fan of Apple. Their equipment is over-priced. Their customer support sucks. But at least their computers work as they were designed. This type of problem would never exist on a Mac computer. 

I have been struggling with the search feature on Windows 7 for four months now on a machine I use at work. One day MS is going to drive someone to lose their mind over their products inability to do simple things they were designed to do.  MS Windows 7 search doesn't find files in my main directory that are there.  I found the file I was looking for another way. The words I searched for are in the file, yet Windows 7 can't find the file.  I normally don't get angry, but I now have more personal animosity for Bill Gates than I have for any person who has ever lived. 

I called a top level Vice President of Customer Support at Microsoft, and they put me in touch with techs who berated and verbally abused me, but who could not solve one of the problems I gave them. Microsoft is the worst POS Company I have ever had to deal with in my entire life.

If Bill Gates wanted to do the world a big favor it would create a operating system that actually worked.
