If you're frustrated with Search (a.k.a. Desktop Search), you are not alone. Click the Start button and type in Search and click on the command "Change how Windows searches". Now click on the Advanced button and select File types tab. Scroll down and locate your file type (in your case **.php)**and make sure that the radio button "Index Properties and File Contents" is selected for the file type.

Come out of the form by clicking the OK button but do not yet close the form where you clicked the Advanced button.

Next, you may need to modify the indexing locations. If the folder wherein your files are located is not known to the search indexing, then search doesn't even bother to look there (a source of frustration for many users). Perhaps your files are on a different disk or partition unbeknown to the indexing engine. Using the expand icon and select/deselect options, make sure that at least the folders of interest are included to the Indexed Locations. Hope this helps.

THIS WAS RIGHT ON THE MARK. I thought others deserved to know that your advice led me to the solution for my inability to do Win7 searches. First, I tried getting the last McAfee update, and then rebuilt my search index—nothing changed. Next, I uninstalled McAfee and downloaded it again. And SUCCESS! By the time I checked the number of files that had been indexed, it had tripled the # than was being indexed earlier--and finally it was picking up files with a .doc extension. I performed a number of successful searches! So if you are using McAfee, forget all the other advice and use this remedy!

    thanks for the advice.

So if I understand you correctly.

You had to totally uninstall McAfee first, and did you use the McAfee removal tool or just MS uninstall ?

    Thanks in advance.

BTW - I'm still sold on "Agent Ransack". It can do advanced Boolean content search onnon index content etc - I'm sounding like a salesman

Auto update to Security Center 2010 kills Windows 7 search

Actually, it's not the auto update to SC 2010 that is the problem, but rather McAfee Total Protection itself that has a built-in defect when run inside Windows 7, Pro and Ultimate included. If you are having trouble with Win 7 Search and its ability to find filesAND you are using McAfee Anti-Virus applications, you should go to this thread at McAfee:

    https://community.mcafee.com/thread/26047?start=135&tstart=0

which is the last of 10 pages of discussions about this issue.  It is NOT a Microsoft issue, it IS a McAfee issue.

When we shut down our Internet connections and removed McAfee through Control Panel, andremained offline so as to protect our computers from infiltration, Indexing worked excellently.  Rebuilding our full system's Index ran for more than 8 hours but when finished, searching through 9+ Tbs of storage drives took only a matter of minutes to find over 16,000 files using a partial name search.

But after reinstalling McAfee, the problem slowly returned and new files were not being indexed, as well as older files began to disappear from the search results.  When we rebuilt the index, it stalls and only shows a few of the more than 846,000 files we have on our drives.  To workaround for now, we removed McAfee and rebuilt the index again, then reinstalled McAfee BUT we won't rebuild the Index again until they give us a hotfix.  We know the Index will collapse over time, but it's the best we can do... except we took our production machines over to Norton, which works fine in Win 7.

To start with the original thread click here: https://community.mcafee.com/thread/26047?tstart=0 but you will be tired of reading until you get to the last couple of pages where McAfee's Consumer Product Management begins to respond to our posts.

If you are running McAfee and have a current subscription and you are running Windows 7, you may find this thread to be of significant importance and you should get on the wagon.

I blamed Microsoft, too, until I found this thread by google searching on "windows 7 search".

I hope this helps some of you...

BTW: McAfee is still distributing and downloading to new users... anyone with Win 7 will have the problem if they allow Windows 7 to Index.  They are paying for a feature in Win 7 that is awesome, but it gets blocked by McAfee. McAfee is supposed to be pulling out the stops to get us a hotfix so we hope they get it out soon.  In the meantime, we work with it as we do with any other software with a glitch.  Most Win 7 users won't know they even have the problem if they don't do much searching.  Once the fix is out, McAfee will deploy it through their subscriptions so all will be well.  Life is always good, sometimes it's interesting, too.

Thanks for this, m_south_a, I shall get the Agent Ransack. What puzzles me is why MD dropped their previous search modules. Lots of new users aren't even going to know that a search procedure exists, when before it was a part of the first menu you met. It is very easy in Windows 7 to accidently move and save files to places you didn't intend.
